If you've looking at and comparing electronic drum kits, you've no doubt noticed that there are kits that cost only a couple hundred quid as well as kits that set you back twenty times that amount. With the DTX6K2-X, Yamaha strike a happy medium, offering a professional kit that falls right into the mid-range in terms of price, but actually packs the kind of features and performance you'd only expect of a flagship model. The Yamaha DTX6K2-X Electronic Drum Kit

You may have heard a thing or two about mesh heads before. While it's true that electronic drum kits with mesh-heads are great and not as excessively loud as acoustic kits, the DTX6K2-X actually doesn't come with any mesh-heads. Is that a bad thing? Not at all! Yamaha carefully designs and considers all of its gear and here, have deliberately opted for rubber tom pads to offer players the best of both worlds, meaning they pack a satisfying and don't make nowhere near as much noise as you'd expect. In fact, the snare pad is even quieter and has been specially designed to simulate the effect of an acoustic drum shell. That's to say, there's air trapped in the shell of an acoustic drum that ensures natural rebound and stick response and, to give the XP80 snare-pad a similar feel, Yamaha have used textured cellular silicone. This special material has lots of tiny 'pockets' that are filled with air, guaranteeing a highly natural, authentic playing feel while keeping the volume down to a minimum. Also, did we mention that, unlike mesh-heads, rubber pads don't tear? Next to the spare, the kit comes with the KP90 kick-pad that can be combined with any standard kick drum pedal - even double bass drum pedals. The included collection of triple-zone cymbal pads is made up of two crashes and a ride cymbal, all of which feature a choke functions, and there's a hi-hat pad that comes pre-mounted on a hi-hat stand. The DTX PRO module, the toms, the snare and all of the cymbals can be securely mounted to an RS6 rack, where the module sits on the right-hand side so you've got more room to set up the hi-hat and a double kick pedal (not included).

The DTX PRO Module

The days of extremely limited drum modules are long gone. The DTX PRO module has been loaded with over 400 high-quality samples, and the built-in drum kit presents sound better than ever before in any DTX kit. Not only that, the module offers vast sound-tweaking potential via an extensive list of options and a large number of effects that can be dropped in per channel. Yamaha have even fitted physical Ambience, Compression and Effect controls, and there's a USB port round the back of the unit that can be used to load in your own samples or to record your beats. Next to USB, the DTX6K2-X can also be linked up with a computer via the 5-pin MIDI output, and Yamaha thoughtfully include a voucher for a copy of Cubase DAW software to help you record. To finish, the DTX PRO module is home to a metronome and various coaching functions so you can hone your skills, and if you want, you can connect your smartphone or tablet to the module to play along to your favourite music and more.
